# Discovery Impressions Everywhere, Invisible in the Map Pack

A Google Business Profile can report healthy search impressions for months on
category and service terms while the business never shows up in the map pack
when you search those same terms yourself. As of September 2026, both readings
can be true together, because an impression and a top-3 slot are different
events. On **8 August 2026** an agency described exactly this on r/localseo: the
profile was verified, the category was right, there were no suspensions, the
business was inside the city, and after checking from other devices, in
incognito and from spoofed locations it was "actually invisible". The gap is not
a broken dashboard. The dashboard measures a much wider net than the one
you checked.

```
  WHAT THE DASHBOARD COUNTS  vs  WHAT YOU CHECKED
  ┌─────────────────────────────────────┬──────────┬──────────┐
  │ surface                             │ counted  │ checked  │
  ├─────────────────────────────────────┼──────────┼──────────┤
  │ 3-pack on the Google results page   │   yes    │   yes    │
  │ Maps app list, scrolled past #3     │   yes    │   no     │
  │ "More places" / local finder list   │   yes    │   no     │
  │ searchers standing near the address │   yes    │ a few pts│
  │ near-name and brand-adjacent terms  │   yes    │   no     │
## An Impression Is Not a Map Pack Position
Google's Performance report for a Business Profile shows how many people viewed
the profile, split by Google Search and Google Maps and by mobile and desktop,
plus a list of the search terms that brought the profile up. As of September
2026 it does not report a position for any of those terms. A view counts when
the profile appears to someone. It does not say where on the list it appeared,
or where that person was standing when it did.
So "solid discovery numbers on category terms" and "not in the 3-pack for
those terms" do not contradict each other. The first is a count across every
surface. The second is one slot on one surface, seen from one spot.
## The Practitioner Already Named the Likely Cause
The poster got most of the way there on their own:
> Best I can figure is GBP is lumping Maps app searches and below-the-pack
> results into the same impression count, which would explain the gap. But the
> dashboard doesn't break any of that out so I can't actually confirm it.
>
> — r/localseo, August 2026
That is the right hypothesis, and the last sentence is the real problem. The
report gives you a Search/Maps split and a device split. It gives you no
position and no location. With no position and no location, the hypothesis
can't be tested from inside the dashboard. It has to be tested from outside.
## Spoofing a Few Coordinates Is a Sample, Not a Map
"Spoofed my coordinates a couple times" is a check of two or three points.
Map pack results change with the searcher's location, often within a few
streets. A profile can hold the pack for people within a short radius of its
address, where many of its impressions come from, and be absent from a
downtown point a mile away.
```
  THE SAME QUERY, SEARCHED FROM 25 POINTS AROUND ONE CITY

      far  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·     · = not in the top 20
           ·  ·  8  ·  ·     3 = in the pack
           ·  6  3  9  ·     6 = visible, below the pack
           ·  ·  5  ·  ·
      far  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·     illustrative layout, not client data

  two spoofed points outside the centre cluster read "invisible"
  the dashboard still counts every impression from the centre cluster
```
If the check points fall outside the cluster, the answer is "invisible" every
time, and it is the true answer for those points. It just isn't the answer for
the whole city.
## The Same Split Shows Up in Other Reports
This is not a one-off. On **15 July 2026** a practitioner working for a personal
injury firm reported about **1.17 million** Business Profile impressions over
three months, while Search Console showed near-zero click-through on the
firm's top terms. Their own check found the profile in the local pack and the
organic listing pushed below it. Two dashboards, two different surfaces, and
neither one says where the business appears on the page.
On **23 July 2026** someone managing "a couple dozen" GBP listings described
impressions flat and website clicks falling since January 2026, and cited
Places Scout figures showing local pack ads rising from under 3% of keywords to
22% between November and January. We have not checked those Places Scout
figures. The pattern they reported is the same one: the count holds while the
visible, clickable position changes underneath it.
## Why the Usual Checklist Does Not Close This Gap
Every item on the poster's list was already clear: verified, correct primary
category, no suspension, decent reviews, located in the city. Those are the
things that get a profile *eligible*. None of them answers where it ranks. More
profile work at this stage is a guess about a problem nobody has measured yet.
It is the same trap covered in
[still not in the map pack top 3](/blog/still-not-in-the-map-pack-top-3): the
fixes get chosen before anyone has seen the map.
Two things are worth ruling out before measuring. First, whether the logged-in
Google account doing the checking has history with the business, which can
colour what it sees. Second, whether the "impressions" terms are really
category terms or are near-name searches that only look generic in the list.
## What to Do When Impressions and Visibility Disagree
1. **Export the search terms list** and split it into brand, near-brand and
   true category terms. Only the last group is a map pack question.
2. **Take the top three category terms** and check them from a grid of points
   across the service area, not from two spoofed spots. See
   [why Google Maps ranking varies by location](/blog/why-google-maps-ranking-varies-by-location)
   for how fast results change across a city.
3. **Read the grid for a cluster.** In the pack near the address and missing
   further out means distance. Missing everywhere means relevance or
   prominence.
4. **Stop using one rank number for the client.** A single "position 7" hides
   the cluster the impressions are coming from. See
   [one rank number lies](/blog/one-rank-number-lies).
5. **Report impressions and grid coverage side by side**, dated, so the next
   "we're invisible" call starts from a map.
