# What Pushes a Google Business Profile Out of the Map Pack

Published: 2026-09-09

A **Google Business Profile** leaves the **Google Maps map pack** in one of two
ways, and they need opposite responses. Either a competitor rose and **passed**
you, or nothing rose and you were **removed** — by a filter, by a re-review
after an edit, or because your profile said you were closed.

A local business owner almost never suspects the first one. In the **19 owner
questions about a Maps ranking drop we collected between 31 July and 19 August
2026**, the causes named were suspension, an address change, a duplicate
listing, vanishing reviews, opening hours and an edit made by the owner.
**Not one named a competitor** — even though being passed is one of only two
ways the pack can lose you.

```
  TWO WAYS OUT OF THE MAP PACK
  your position falls
    │
    ├─ someone else rose
    │    → you were PASSED
    │      the pack still contains three, one is new
    │
    └─ nothing rose, you left
         → you were REMOVED
           a filter · a re-review · closed hours
```

## Why the Competitor Is the Blind Spot

The pack holds three places. When a fourth business becomes better matched or
better known than you for a given search, you leave — and nothing about your
profile changed, which is exactly why the cause is invisible from inside your
own dashboard.

Being passed has one signature worth knowing: **it is gradual, or it is
geographic, and usually not both.** A competitor gaining prominence takes weeks;
a competitor opening nearby takes your position immediately but only on their
side of the map.

The second kind is documented in the corpus — an owner knocked out of the top
three in August 2026 by a shop that simply opened inside their radius, with a
better rating and more reviews than the newcomer, and no change to their own
profile. That case is examined in
[relevance, distance and prominence, separated](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/map-pack-relevance-distance-prominence),
because it is really about how eligibility is calculated.

What matters here is what it looks like from inside the affected business: no
notice, no dashboard warning, no field out of place, and no fault to find in
your own listing. Every diagnostic an owner is told to run comes back clean,
because nothing on their side is broken. **Being passed is the only cause of a
drop that leaves no evidence on your own profile** — which is why it needs to be
ruled out by looking at who is above you, not by auditing yourself.

If nobody new is above you and nothing about your own listing changed, the
question moves to the signals that decide the order in the first place —
[relevance, distance and prominence, separated](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/map-pack-relevance-distance-prominence).

## Removal Has Three Mechanisms

Removal is the other half, and unlike being passed it leaves a trace.

```
  REMOVED — THREE MECHANISMS, THREE SIGNATURES
  ┌──────────────────┬──────────────────────────┐
  │ filtered         │ findable by name, gone   │
  │                  │ from the pack            │
  ├──────────────────┼──────────────────────────┤
  │ back in review   │ dated to an edit, fields │
  │                  │ missing on the listing   │
  ├──────────────────┼──────────────────────────┤
  │ listed as closed │ returns when you open    │
  └──────────────────┴──────────────────────────┘
  only the third fixes itself
```

The distinction matters because two of these are states you can leave and one
of them is a state you can be put back into. The full check order for a drop is

## The Edit That Removes You

Editing a profile is the most common self-inflicted removal, and the visible
symptom is not a lower position — it is a listing that has gone thin.

An agency described this on **11 July 2026**, managing a tax advisory firm's
profile. They updated the entire services section, added several secondary
categories without touching the primary, and published four posts. By the
following day the profile still appeared for its own name, but:

> it only shows the business name and a Directions button. Most of the
> information like phone number, website, hours, services and reviews is
> missing.
>
> — agency report, r/localseo, July 2026

That is the signature to match against. **A drop that is really a re-review
removes fields, not just position** — and it is dated to the day the edits were
made. Several changes went out at once here, which is the other lesson: batching
edits makes the cause unrecoverable even when the effect is obvious.

## Closed Is a Removal With a Timer

The mechanism most likely to be missed is the one that repairs itself before you
finish investigating.

A practitioner summarised the evidence on **16 July 2026**, citing the 2026
Whitespark local search ranking factors report, which places *"business is open
at time of search"* at **#5 among local pack signals**, and reporting that
BrightLocal tracked **50 businesses across 10 categories** and saw rankings fall
consistently while a business was listed as closed and recover when the profile
flipped to open. Their read on the practical consequence:

> restaurant closed mondays ranks fine tuesday but disappears monday morning.
> business near closing time drops in the last hour.
>
> — r/localseo, July 2026

We are citing a practitioner's summary of those reports rather than the reports
themselves, and it is worth weighting accordingly. What the summary does explain
is a class of complaint that otherwise looks like noise: rankings that swing by
hour of day. Wrong hours, un-updated holiday hours and profiles claiming 24/7
availability all convert a schedule into a ranking event. It is recent enough
that most published lists of
[Google Maps ranking factors](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-maps-ranking-factors-2026)
still do not carry it.

## When the Pack Changed and You Did Not

There is a third case that is not a ranking change at all, and it is the one
most likely to be misdiagnosed as a drop because the business outcome is
identical.

```
  WHEN THE PACK CHANGED AND YOU DID NOT
  ┌────────────────────────┬──────────────────┐
  │ map pack position      │ still #1         │
  │ calls per month        │ 22 → 2           │
  │ what changed           │ the call button  │
  │ who else lost it       │ every competitor │
  └────────────────────────┴──────────────────┘
  one SAB listing · reported July 2026
```

An agency reported this on **25 July 2026** for a home service client: calls
fell from an average of 22 a month to 2, and a day spent ruling out tracking,
rankings, phone numbers and seasonality found nothing — the profile was
verified and still ranked first. The cause was that Google had removed the
direct call button from the mobile map pack for those queries, replacing it with
a photo and directions. Every competitor in the pack lost it too.

Nothing about that business's ranking moved. If the owner had been watching
positions alone, the month would have looked healthy while the phone stopped
ringing — which is why a report built on position needs a call and direction
figure sitting next to it.

## Deciding Which One You Have

Work through these in order. Each rules out one mechanism.

1. **Is a business above you that was not there before?** If yes, you were
   passed, and the work is competitive rather than technical.
2. **Are you findable by name but absent from the pack?** That is a filter,
   most often a duplicate listing at your address.
3. **Are fields missing from your listing?** That is a re-review. Date it to
   your last edit.
4. **Were you open when you searched?** Check again during trading hours before
   diagnosing anything else.
5. **Did anything about the pack itself change?** Compare against a competitor
   in the same pack. If they lost the same thing, it was not you.
6. **Did you check from more than one place?** Position varies by measuring
   point, so a drop seen once from one spot may not exist —
   [why one rank number lies](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/one-rank-number-lies).

**Not cited, and why.** We have not read the Whitespark or BrightLocal reports

practitioner reported those reports say, on a date, and it is labelled that way.
Percentage splits of drop causes circulate widely and name no dataset, so none
