# Google Maps Ranking Dropped: How to Find What Actually Changed
URL: https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-maps-ranking-dropped
Published: 2026-09-01

When a local business owner finds their **Google Business Profile** ranking
lower in **Google Maps** and nothing was suspended, four causes are worth ruling
out before any others: **a reporting error**, **normal position-based
variation**, **a duplicate listing being filtered**, or **an edit you made that
sent the profile back for re-review**. Address and category are the two edits
that most reliably trigger one.

That order is a check sequence, not a frequency ranking: in our own corpus of
19 owner reports, **11 could name no cause at all**, which is why the cheap
checks come first. The first three are free and take minutes.

One more cause is worth knowing early. Since Google's **November 2023 core
update**, whether a business is **currently open** affects local pack position.

```
  DID IT DISAPPEAR, OR JUST FALL?
    │
    ├─ gone from Maps AND Search
    │    plus a notice in the dashboard
    │    → SUSPENSION — a different problem
    │
    └─ still findable by name, just lower
         │
         ├─ fell in a single day
         │    → something CHANGED at once
         │    an edit · a filter · a core update
         │
         └─ slipped across weeks
              → something DECAYED
              stale hours · slowing reviews
              · a competitor gaining
```

## Check In This Order

Cheapest and most likely first. Each of the first three is free and takes
minutes.

1. **Search your own business name.** If you appear, you were not suspended.
   Ten seconds, and it eliminates the cause most of the internet writes about.
2. **Check from more than one device and location.** Distance from the
   searcher is a live ranking input, so one check from one phone is not a
   measurement — see
   [why Google Maps ranking varies by location](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/why-google-maps-ranking-varies-by-location).
3. **Search your business name and your street address separately.** Count the
   listings that come back. Two at one address means one is being filtered.
4. **List every edit made in the last 30 days.** Address and category are the
   two that most reliably send a profile back for re-review.
5. **Check whether you were open when you searched.** Since November 2023 this
   is a ranking input, and the drop it causes disappears by itself.

## What "Dropped" Actually Means

"Dropped" describes four different situations with different fixes:

- **Ranking lower but still visible** — you were passed, or something decayed.
- **Filtered out of the map pack while still existing** — usually a duplicate.
- **Suspended or disabled** — the only one that is an account problem, and the
  only one that announces itself in the dashboard.
- **Ranking exactly where it always did, sending fewer leads** — not a ranking
  drop at all. If you never ranked in the first place, that is a different
  problem:
  [why your business is not showing on Google Maps](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/why-is-my-business-not-showing-on-google-maps).

Each of those leaves a different signature, and the signature is what you
match against:

```
  WHAT EACH CAUSE LOOKS LIKE
  ┌──────────────────────┬─────────────────────────────┐
  │ cause                │ signature                   │
  ├──────────────────────┼─────────────────────────────┤
  │ reporting error      │ only one tool moves         │
  │ position variation   │ changes where you check     │
  │ duplicate filtered   │ out of pack, still findable │
  │ edit / re-review     │ dated to an edit, holds     │
  │ closed when searched │ returns when you open       │
  │ competitor gaining   │ slides over weeks, no event │
  └──────────────────────┴─────────────────────────────┘
```

The field service software company Fieldmotion published this same four-way
split in its 2025 guide to Maps ranking drops. The fourth state is the one
almost nobody names, and it is a demand change, a seasonal dip, or a
competitor buying ads above you. The symptom an owner feels is identical in
all four cases: the phone stops ringing.

## What 19 Owners Actually Said

Between **31 July and 19 August 2026** we collected every owner question about
a Maps ranking drop we could find across Reddit and the Google Business
Profile help forum. **23 titles, 21 unique, 19 of them genuine owner
questions.** Here is what they named as the cause:

| what the owner named | owners | example, verbatim |
|---|---|---|
| **nothing at all** | **11** | "Ranking Dropped" · "my business profile ranking decreasing" |
| suspension, ruled in or out | 2 | "Listing dropped from #1 to 21+ for all keyword rankings. No suspension" |
| an address or location change | 2 | "why did my ranking drop after google changed my location" |
| reviews vanishing | 1 | "Approximately 800 Genuine Google Reviews Disappeared From Our Business Profile" |
| a duplicate listing | 1 | "GMB suddenly dropped from #1 after 2 new listings with the same address appeared" |
| a change to opening hours | 1 | "GMB ranking dropped after reducing clinic hours" |
| an edit they made themselves | 1 | "Changed GMB url to include tracking parameters, then saw a rankings drop" |

*Owner questions collected 31 July – 19 August 2026, 18 from Reddit and 5 from
the Google Business Profile help forum. Counts are of unique questions after
removing 2 duplicate posts and 2 posts that were not owner questions.*

**Eleven of nineteen owners had no hypothesis whatsoever.** Four described the
drop as sudden or overnight. That is why this page is ordered as a checklist
rather than an essay: the majority arrive with no candidate cause at all, and
no single cause dominates the ones who do — the largest named group is two
owners. There is no common culprit to lead with, so the order below is by what
is cheapest to rule out.

## First, Confirm a Drop Happened

Before diagnosing a drop, confirm one happened.

On The Map Marketing, in its 2025 breakdown of fluctuations versus genuine
drops, puts **faulty reporting first** among the causes of a large apparent
fall — rank trackers are software, and software breaks. We build one, so take
this from an interested party: a single alarming number from any tool is a
prompt to check, not a finding.

Position is the second reason. Two people on the same street can see different
results at the same moment. One owner in the corpus above put a number on it,
in the title of their own thread:

> my google business profile ranking dropped from 4th to 10th please check for
> any technical issues
>
> — Google Business Profile forum thread title, collected August 2026

Six places is well inside the range a different measuring point can produce on
its own — and the request in that title, for a technical fault to be found, is
the assumption worth pausing on. This is the trap in
[trusting one rank number](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/one-rank-number-lies):
it cannot tell you whether you lost everywhere or only in patches.

## It Is Not a Suspension

A ranking drop and a suspension are different failures with different
evidence.

```
  SUSPENDED OR DROPPED
  ┌──────────────────────────┬─────────────────────────┐
  │ suspended                │ dropped                 │
  ├──────────────────────────┼─────────────────────────┤
  │ gone from Maps + Search  │ still there             │
  │ notice in the dashboard  │ nothing in dashboard    │
  │ name search finds no one │ name search finds you   │
  │ fix = reinstatement      │ fix = find the cause    │
  └──────────────────────────┴─────────────────────────┘
```

**Searching your own business name settles it in about ten seconds.** Only 2
of the 19 owner questions mention suspension at all, and one of those was an
owner ruling it out — *"No suspension"* — before asking anything else.

Rule it out first because the published record pushes the other way. When we
ran that owner's exact phrasing through search in August 2026, **seven of
eight results returned suspension and reinstatement advice** rather than
anything about ranking. Google Ads data explains why: *google business profile
suspension* draws **390 searches a month**, while every phrasing of a ranking
drop returns no data at all. Filing a reinstatement for a working profile puts
your listing in front of a reviewer you had no reason to invite.

## What Changed on the Profile

Editing a Google Business Profile can send it back for re-review, and
**address and category are the two edits that most reliably do it**.

There is no published timeframe for how long that takes or when rankings
return. We checked Google's own guidance in August 2026 and it names none, and
neither does any of the four highest-ranking pages on this topic. Owner
reports are the only evidence that exists, and they describe waits in weeks:

> service area business relocated from melton to canberra still ranking in old
> city after 5 weeks
>
> — Google Business Profile forum thread title, collected August 2026

> its been over 2 months since our move and our ranking is basically 0 what do
> i do
>
> — Google Business Profile forum thread title, collected August 2026

```
  AFTER AN EDIT — WHAT IS KNOWN
  ┌───────────────────────────┬────────────────┐
  │ the edit is made          │ documented     │
  │ a re-review may start     │ documented     │
  │ when rankings return      │ NO TIMEFRAME   │
  └───────────────────────────┴────────────────┘
  WHAT OWNERS REPORT INSTEAD
  ┌───────────┬───────────────────────────────┐
  │ 5 weeks   │ still ranking in the old city │
  │ 2 months  │ ranking basically zero        │
  └───────────┴───────────────────────────────┘
```

Relocation is the harshest case in this group. Distance is measured from the searcher to you, so a new
address rewrites every result at once. If you moved, you did not drop — you
are being ranked from a different starting point, and the honest answer on
timing is that nobody has published one. If you serve customers at their
address rather than yours, the rules differ again —
[local SEO for service area businesses](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/local-seo-for-service-area-businesses)
covers that case.

## The Duplicate Nobody Checks

When two listings share one address, Google filters one out rather than
showing both.

It does not reliably keep the better one. Sterling Sky, the local search agency
that documented this behaviour, reported in guidance we checked in **August
2026** that the filtered listing is
often the one carrying the reviews — leaving a blank duplicate visible in its
place. To the owner this reads as a collapse: the listing built over years is
no longer in the pack, while the dashboard shows nothing wrong, because
nothing is wrong with it.

Duplicates rarely get created on purpose:

- a franchise head office adds one
- a data aggregator submits one
- a previous tenant's listing was never closed

## Hours Are a Ranking Factor Now

Since the **November 2023 core update**, Google weighs whether a business is
**currently open** when ranking the local pack.

Sterling Sky documented a lawyer falling from **position 1 to position 10**
while closed and recovering when open again — a pattern corroborated by hourly
Local Falcon scans. It is recent enough that most published lists of
[Google Maps ranking factors](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-maps-ranking-factors-2026)
still do not include it. This is the cause most likely to be missed, because it
does not persist. Check at 2pm and the drop is gone.

One report in our corpus is exactly this, and the owner had already made the
connection: *"GMB ranking dropped after reducing clinic hours."* A drop that
appears and disappears on a schedule is an hours problem, which makes reduced
hours a ranking event and not only an operations one.

## Every Number on This Page

| what | figure | when | source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owners arrive with no candidate cause | **11 of 19** owner questions name no cause at all | 31 July – 19 Aug 2026 | our own discourse corpus |
| No cause dominates the ones who do guess | the largest named group is **2 of 19**, twice over | 31 July – 19 Aug 2026 | our own discourse corpus |
| Being open affects local pack position | a lawyer fell from **position 1 to 10** while closed | since the November 2023 core update | Sterling Sky, corroborated by hourly Local Falcon scans |
| Drop language is invisible to keyword tools | **19 of 21** phrasings return no data in Google Ads *and* DataForSEO Labs | checked 28 August 2026 | our own DataForSEO pull |
| The only priced term in the cluster | *google business profile suspension*, **390** searches/month, difficulty **7** | August 2026 | Google Ads |
| Rank-tracking vendors have not written this page | **0** of **2,770** published pages across 7 vendors | scanned August 2026 | our own competitor corpus |

*Figures as checked on the dates shown.*

Put the last three together. Owners ask about this constantly, the keyword
tools cannot see them asking, and the seven companies selling rank tracking
have published nothing about it across 2,770 pages. **The tools cannot measure
the demand, so the market has not written the answer.**

## Where to Go Next

Five pieces go deeper on one branch each. They publish through the first week
of September, and this page links to each one as it lands.

1. **How to Tell a Real Map Pack Drop From Normal Daily Fluctuation** — start
   here if you are not sure the drop is real. Most alarming numbers are normal
   variation, and that decides whether there is anything to fix at all.
2. **What Actually Pushes a Google Business Profile Out of the Map Pack** —
   the causes rather than the symptoms, in the order the inputs carry weight.
3. **Suspension vs Ranking Drop: How to Tell Which One You Have** — both
   states side by side, for when a notice did appear or you are still not
   certain.
4. **Which Google Business Profile Edits Trigger a Re-Review** — which edits
   are risky and which are safe, if the drop followed something you changed.
5. **Duplicate Listing at the Same Address: The Drop Nobody Diagnoses** — what
   the filter does, and what to do about it, if you found more than one
   listing at your address.

Once the drop is diagnosed and fixed, the work turns into ordinary ranking
work: [how to rank in the Google map pack](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/how-to-rank-in-the-google-map-pack),
and [what geogrid rank tracking is](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/what-is-geogrid-rank-tracking)
if you want to see the next drop as a map rather than a number.
