# How Long It Takes to Rank in the Google Map Pack

There is no published figure for how long a **Google Business Profile** takes to
reach the top 3 of the **Google Maps map pack**, and a local business owner
asking for one is not missing something — the number does not exist. When a
practitioner asked that exact question on r/localseo on **24 July 2026**, eight
people answered substantively and **seven of the eight declined to give any
period of time at all**.

The single dated case we can find with measurements on both ends took **90
days**, and it moved a business from around 20th to a **grid average of 6.6**
with several top-3 points — published on **4 January 2026** with before-and-after
grid screenshots.

## Why Nobody Will Give You a Number

The refusals are not evasion. Read together they describe a real property of
local ranking: the finish line is set by your competitors, not by your effort.

The one answer that did give figures set both ends of the range:

> Low competition area, maybe a few months. Saturated market like lawyers or
> dentists, could be 6-12 months even with 200-300 reviews since everyone's got
> similar numbers
>
> — r/localseo, July 2026

Another closed the thread with the reason:

> this question is basically asking how long in a piece of string without
> telling us how long the string is.

That is the honest shape of it. Three businesses fit in the pack, so your
timeline is however long it takes to displace whoever currently holds the third
slot — and one of the three signals deciding that, distance, you cannot change
at all. The mechanics are in
[relevance, distance and prominence, separated](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/map-pack-relevance-distance-prominence).

## The One Case With Dates and a Grid

On **4 January 2026** a practitioner published a tire shop's before-and-after as
a 7×7 grid scan, with the screenshots attached. It became the highest-voted post
in our map pack corpus at 92 upvotes, largely because it showed numbers at all.

```
  NINETY DAYS, MEASURED ON A GRID
  ┌────────────┬───────────────────────────────┐
  │ before     │ ranked 20-25th, red across    │
  │ after 90d  │ grid average 6.6, top-3 spots │
  └────────────┴───────────────────────────────┘
  one tire shop · 7x7 grid · published Jan 2026
```

What was actually done, in their own account:

- **Fixed a year of indexing damage.** The site had sat behind a "coming soon"
  placeholder for almost a year. Pages had to be resubmitted repeatedly before
  Google would crawl them again.
- **Chose categories on data.** Categories were picked using keyword volume
  rather than by guessing which one sounded right.
- **Filled in services and extended hours** to catch early-morning and
  late-night searches when competitors were closed.
- **Ran reviews as a cadence**, not a campaign — 30 or more a month.
- **Posted real job-site photos** on a steady drip rather than one large batch.

None of that is exotic. A commenter said so approvingly:

> Nice work. Didn't try to reinvent the wheel. Just perfected the well-known
> levers.
>
> — r/localseo, January 2026

Ninety days is what
the well-known levers took, on one business, in one market, with a broken site
to repair first.

## Read What "6.6" Actually Is

The result was reported as a grid average, and that is the part worth copying
even if you never touch a tire shop.

A single position answers "where do I rank from one spot". A grid average
answers "where do I rank across the area I serve", which is the question a
90-day project is really asking. The same business improving from 20th to 6.6
on average will still be outside the pack in parts of its own map — that is what
an average of 6.6 means. This is why we build
[geo-grid rank tracking](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/what-is-geogrid-rank-tracking)
rather than a single number, and it is also why "we hit the top 3" is a claim
that should always be followed by "measured where".

## What Moves on Which Clock

The corpus is consistent about the ordering even though it refuses to be
consistent about the totals.

```
  WHAT MOVES ON WHAT CLOCK
  ┌───────────────────────┬──────────────────┐
  │ primary category      │ hours to days    │
  │ services and hours    │ hours to days    │
  │ indexing after a fix  │ weeks            │
  │ review pattern        │ months           │
  │ local links and PR    │ months           │
  │ your address          │ never            │
  └───────────────────────┴──────────────────┘
  ranges reported by practitioners, not measured
```

The top two rows are why the first week of any map pack project should be spent
on profile fields. They are the only changes that can register almost
immediately, and they cost nothing — the full field list is the
[Google Business Profile optimisation checklist](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-business-profile-optimization-checklist).

## Two Things That Reset the Clock

Both appear in the corpus and both are self-inflicted.

1. **Indexing damage.** The tire shop lost a year to a placeholder page, and
   the recovery was not automatic — pages needed resubmitting five times before
   Google re-crawled them. A site Google has stopped trusting to be live is a
   prerequisite problem, not a ranking problem.
2. **Editing the profile while waiting.** Changes to the address or the primary
   category can send a profile back for re-review, and there is no published
   timeframe for when rankings return afterwards. If your position falls during
   a project rather than rising, start with
   [what actually changed](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-maps-ranking-dropped)
   before adding more work on top.

## How to Tell It Is Working Before It Is Finished

Waiting 90 days for a yes-or-no answer is the wrong instrument. Movement shows
up earlier than arrival does, if you are measuring the right thing.

| what to watch | what counts as progress |
|---|---|
| grid average | falling, even while no point reaches the top 3 |
| number of grid points in the top 10 | rising before any reach the top 3 |
| the edge of your area | red turning amber, not amber turning green |
| position from one spot | ignore it — it moves on its own |

The broader sequence of work these measurements sit on top of is in
[how to rank in the Google map pack](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/how-to-rank-in-the-google-map-pack).

**Not cited, and why.** Several agency pages quote a fixed ramp — "results in
30 days", "top 3 in 90 days" — as a general expectation rather than as one
client's outcome. We found no dataset behind any of them, so the only timeline
on this page is the one case that published its measurements.
