# An AEO Add-On Is Only Useful If It Asks Customer Questions

An AEO feature in a local SEO tool is only worth paying for if it asks AI
assistants the questions a business's customers actually ask, from the
customer's location, more than once, and records which businesses get named.
As of September 2026 a feature that checks whether the brand name appears for a
list of keywords measures the wrong thing, because assistants rewrite the
question before they search and give different answers from one run to the
next. On **9 July 2026** a small local SEO agency asked r/localseo for one tool
for all its clients, with a "primary use case helping them improve Google and
ChatGPT visibility", a simple interface, analytics and automation. The thread
drew 55 replies.

## Agencies Already Use AI Assistants More Than Local Suites

In our ledger of tools named in r/localseo posts from August 2025 to August
2026, ChatGPT appears in 37 posts. The most-named paid local suite,
BrightLocal, appears in 28. Gemini appears in 20, and the most-named grid
tracker in 7. Practitioners are already working inside AI assistants every day.
The question is whether a tool's AEO module measures anything they can't get
by asking directly.

## The Assistant Doesn't Search for What the Customer Typed

We covered this in
[local businesses invisible to ChatGPT](/blog/local-businesses-invisible-to-chatgpt).
Recorded ChatGPT sessions show a question like "how do i advertise my home
salon?" being rewritten into a longer query with category terms and a year
before anything is retrieved. A tool that checks your keyword list is testing a
query no customer typed, and one the assistant may never send.

That matters more for local. A practitioner summarising published citation
studies in July 2026 wrote that "for local, the model rarely quotes the
business's own site" and builds its picture from third-party sources instead.
They cited Ahrefs' finding that only about 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews
also rank in the top 10, down from about 76% in mid-2025. That's their
summary, and we haven't re-checked it. The direction is clear either way:
ranking well organically no longer guarantees being cited, so a tool
has to check the assistant directly.

## One Run Is an Anecdote

AI assistant answers vary between runs of the same question. A feature that
asks once and reports "mentioned" or "not mentioned" gives a coin toss a
decimal point. Asking each question several times and reporting the share of
runs that name the client is the least a useful feature should do.

For a client report, that share is the number to track month by month: out of
ten runs of "best physio near me" from the client's suburb, how many named the
client, and who got named instead. It's the AI equivalent of map pack coverage.
It gives the client something they can follow over time, and it points at the
competitors the assistant prefers, which is where the work starts.

## The Skeptics Have a Point About Dashboards

In September 2025 a widely upvoted r/bigseo post (85 upvotes) called many
GEO and AIO platforms little more than prompt engineering wrapped in impressive dashboards. That's a fair warning about packaging. The test above is how to
tell a real measurement from a dashboard: can the tool show which questions it
asked, from where, how many times, and exactly who was named?

> Most of these tools are either glorified prompt engineering or completely
> delusional about what they actually accomplish, yet they're charging
> enterprise prices for basic automation that you could build yourself over a
> weekend.

## What to Ask Before Buying a Tool With AEO Built In

1. **Can I enter customer questions**, written the way customers talk, not
   only keywords?
2. **Does it ask from the client's town**, and say how it sets location?
3. **How many runs per question**, and does it report a share, not a yes/no?
4. **Does it record every business named**, so you can see who is winning
   instead of the client?
5. **Can I see it next to the map pack** for the same service and town? For
the files some assistants read, see
