# Relevance, Distance, Prominence: The Map Pack Signals Separated
URL: https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/map-pack-relevance-distance-prominence
Published: 2026-09-07

Google tells a local business owner that **Google Business Profile** results in
the **Google Maps map pack** are ranked on three things — **relevance**,
**distance** and **prominence** — and publishes no weighting between them. That
missing weighting is the entire practical question.

The closest thing to an answer is what experienced practitioners reach for
first. In **20 substantive replies to one r/localseo thread on 21 July 2026**,
asking how a business with a single review held a top-3 position in a
competitive keyword, **10 named distance** and **9 named the keyword sitting in
the business name**. Only 6 mentioned reviews, and every one of those said
reviews matter less than owners assume. **None of the 20 said the listing
should not be ranking.**

```
  THE THREE SIGNALS, SEPARATED
  ┌────────────┬──────────────────────┬───────────┐
  │ signal     │ what it measures     │ you move  │
  ├────────────┼──────────────────────┼───────────┤
  │ relevance  │ match to the query   │ in a day  │
  │ distance   │ searcher → your pin  │ not at all│
  │ prominence │ how known you are    │ in months │
  └────────────┴──────────────────────┴───────────┘
  Google names all three and weights none
```

## What Google Actually Says

Google's own Business Profile documentation defines the three signals in one
paragraph each, and the definitions are narrower than most summaries of them:

- **Relevance** is how well your profile matches what someone searched for.
- **Distance** is how far each result sits from the location used in the
  search — not from your office, and not from the city centre.
- **Prominence** is how well known the business is, drawn from information
  Google holds across the web as well as from reviews.

Three sentences, and then nothing. No order, no percentages, no worked example.
Everything published about map pack weighting past that point is inference, and
the honest guides say so. Ours does too, in the broader walkthrough of
[how to rank in the Google map pack](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/how-to-rank-in-the-google-map-pack).

## What Practitioners Reach For First

The rule an owner is usually taught is "get more reviews than your
competitors." A thread posted on 21 July 2026 handed that rule a
counter-example: [a business with **one review** holding a top-3 map pack](https://getrankonmap.com/blog/business-with-one-review-ranks-top-3)
position in a competitive keyword. The asker's own words were *"goes against
exactly what I was taught."*

Twenty practitioners answered. We classified every substantive reply by the
cause it named — several named more than one, and each is counted under each:

```
  WHAT TWENTY PRACTITIONERS REACHED FOR FIRST
  proximity                  ██████████  10
  keyword in business name   █████████    9
  reviews weigh less         ██████       6
  website or backlinks       ████         4
  category match             ██           2
  ───────────────────────────────────────────
  said it should not rank    ·            0
  one listing · 20 replies · r/localseo · Jul 2026
```

The top-voted reply, at 25 upvotes, is a single sentence about distance:

> maps will show a closer business with 1 review over a better reviewed one 10
> miles away
>
> — r/localseo, 25 upvotes

The second, at 14 upvotes, is about the name:

> Making your name the keyword does and seemingly will always work really well
> despite what they say.
>
> — r/localseo, 14 upvotes

This is not a weighting and we will not present it as one. It is what twenty
people who do this daily reached for when shown a result that contradicted the
textbook — and the zero at the bottom is the part worth keeping. Nobody was
surprised.

## Distance Is Measured, Not Declared

Distance is the signal owners most often try to change and the one they can
change least. It is calculated from the searcher to a fixed point, and that
point is the address verified when the profile was created — whether or not
that address is shown publicly.

```
  DISTANCE IS MEASURED, NOT DECLARED
  ┌──────────────────────────┬─────────────────┐
  │ your service area radius │ display only    │
  │ your verified address    │ the measurement │
  │ a rival's new shopfront  │ moves your rank │
  └──────────────────────────┴─────────────────┘
  widening the radius moves nothing
```

A practitioner post of **17 August 2026** makes the case directly, citing
proximity testing by Whitespark and Sterling Sky: the service area radius is
there to tell customers where you travel, and widening it from 15 miles to 30
does not extend ranking into the towns you added. For businesses with no
storefront this is the whole game, and it is covered separately in
[local SEO for service area businesses](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/local-seo-for-service-area-businesses).

The consequence lands on owners with no warning. One posted on **10 August
2026** after being pushed out of the top three by a shop that had simply
opened nearby:

> Despite a higher rating, number of reviews and active profile. It seems this
> stuff no longer matters, or maybe it always hasn't .. only who is closest to
> the searching Maps user.
>
> — owner report, r/GoogleMyBusiness, August 2026

Nothing on that profile got worse. The map got more crowded on one side, which
is why a single position from a single check tells you so little — see
[why one rank number lies](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/one-rank-number-lies).

## But Distance Does Not Decide It Alone

If distance settled the pack, the closest three businesses would always be the
three shown, and they demonstrably are not.

On **6 August 2026** an owner in the Washington DC area reported a competitor
ranking **#1 in the map pack from 20 hours away** — operating out of Dallas,
holding a profile at a DC coworking address, with a landing page and a profile
for every major US city, and reviews the owner believed were bought.

Read that case carefully, because it is not an illustration of legitimate
signals beating distance. It is an allegation of **guideline violation** — a
registered address the business does not work from, and fabricated reviews. If
the account is accurate, the lesson is that the eligibility test runs on the
address Google has been given, and a false address defeats it. That is a
reporting problem, not a ranking strategy, and copying it is how profiles get
suspended.

What the case does establish is the shape of the system: **distance sets who is
eligible, relevance and prominence order the ones who are.** A business too far
away is not in the running; among those that are, the closest does not
automatically win. Manipulating the first step is exactly why it is worth
knowing that the first step exists.

## Relevance Is Mostly Category and Name

Relevance is the fastest of the three to move, because it is largely made of
two fields.

1. **Your primary category.** An exact category match to the query outranks a
   broader one. In the answer set above, category was named alongside distance
   in the top-voted reply.
2. **Your business name.** Nine of twenty practitioners named it, several
   noting they wish it were otherwise. A name containing the search term is
   read as a relevance signal.

Using a name your business does not trade under violates Google's guidelines
and is a common suspension trigger — this is an observation about how ranking
behaves, not a recommendation. Everything legitimate you can do here is field
work, and the fields are enumerated in the
[Google Business Profile optimisation checklist](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-business-profile-optimization-checklist).

## Prominence Is the Slow One

Prominence is the only signal built rather than set, and the corpus is
consistent that its recent shape matters more than its total.

A thread on **27 March 2026** put the question sharply: businesses with
thousands of lifetime reviews being outranked by newer competitors earning
three to five reviews a week, where the older listing had gone months without
The top reply, at 4 upvotes:

> 100% - Review recency is the primary "ongoing" ranking factor for GBP.
>
> — r/localseo, March 2026

A second practitioner reframed it as momentum rather than substitution —
freshness helps only when the category and page alignment underneath are already
right.

Whether reviews move rankings at all, and by how much, is its own question:
[do reviews improve Google Maps ranking](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/do-reviews-improve-google-maps-ranking).

## What to Do With Three Signals and No Weights

| signal | how fast it moves | worth your next hour? |
|---|---|---|
| relevance | same day | yes — category and services first |
| prominence | weeks to months | yes — start now, judge later |
| distance | not at all | no — measure it, don't fight it |

Two of the three are work. The third is a fact about your address, and the only
sensible response to it is to stop treating one position as your ranking and
start reading it across a grid, which is what
[geo-grid rank tracking](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/what-is-geogrid-rank-tracking)
is for.

**Not cited, and why.** Numeric weightings of relevance, distance and
prominence circulate widely — 25/25/50 and similar. None of the ones we checked
names a study, a dataset or a date, and Google publishes no weighting at all, so
none appears on this page.
