# No Local SEO Tool Is 90% Accurate, and None Can Be

No local rank tracker can promise 90% accuracy, because a map pack position has
no single true value to be accurate against. It changes with where the
searcher stands, what device they use, and the time of day. As of September
2026 the useful question for an agency choosing a tracker isn't accuracy. It's
whether the tool checks the same points, the same way, every time, so that a
change in the readings means a change in the rankings. On **1 August 2026** an
agency that "suddenly" won its first local SEO project asked r/localseo for
tools "that can help with near to 90% accuracy" for tracking performance and
grid rankings across locations. The thread drew 11 replies.

```
  WHAT A LOCAL RANK READING DEPENDS ON
  ┌────────────────────────┬────────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ the searcher's point   │ a few streets can change the pack      │
  │ device and settings    │ mobile, desktop, signed-in history     │
  │ time of the check      │ practitioners report intraday movement │
  │ how the tool fetches   │ an upstream change can break every tool│
  └────────────────────────┴────────────────────────────────────────┘
  hold the first three constant and the fourth is the tool's job
```

## There Is No True Position to Be 90% Right About

One practitioner put it bluntly in July 2026: "the 3-pack moves 5 times a day
based on the searchers location and device. a screenshot of #1 from your
office means nothing." That's one person's observation, not a measurement,
but it describes the problem well. A map pack rank is a reading taken from one
place at one moment. A different place, or a different moment, gives a
different reading, and both are correct.

So "90% accurate" has nothing to be measured against. What a tracker can do is
take the same reading consistently.

## Consistency Is the Property to Buy

A grid of points checked at the same time of day, with the same settings, and
the same number of points each time, turns a moving target into a trend you can
use. If week one shows the client in the top 3 at 9 of 25 points and week six
shows 14 of 25, the change is real even though no single reading was "the true
rank".

Grid size is the other setting to hold steady. More points give a finer map
and cost more per run, and most trackers charge by the point. For a first local
project, a modest grid on three to five money terms, run on a fixed schedule,
answers the client's real question: where are we visible, and is that area
growing? A bigger grid run once looks impressive, but it can't show a trend
until it's run again the same way.

That's also why a single rank number misleads. It picks one reading and
presents it as the whole picture. We cover this in
[one rank number lies](/blog/one-rank-number-lies).

## Manual Checks Are the Least Consistent Method

A business owner described the opposite approach in February 2026. Their agency
dropped the agreed source of truth, Search Console, and started checking
rankings by hand on its own devices, reporting top positions while the client's
data showed three months of decline. Hand checks inherit the checker's
location, history and device. A practitioner running three plumbing locations
said in December 2025 that manual searches by zip code were too slow and probably not accurate either. Both are right to distrust them. A method nobody can repeat can't show a trend.

> Right now I'm basically doing manual searches in different zip codes which
> is eating up way too much time and probably not even accurate.

## Every Tool Depends on Something Upstream

In September 2025 Google stopped returning 100 results per request, and rank
trackers across the industry showed sudden drops that weren't real ranking
changes. One practitioner said weeks later that page-two positions still weren't
tracked properly in their tool. That was for organic tracking, but the lesson
carries over. When readings jump across every client on the same day, check
the tool before you tell a client anything. See
[a real map pack drop vs normal fluctuation](/blog/real-map-pack-drop-vs-fluctuation).

## What to Ask a Local Rank Tracker Instead

1. **Does it check a fixed grid of points** you can set, and repeat the same
   points every run?
2. **Can you set the time and frequency** so runs are comparable? See
   [daily vs periodic map rank tracking](/blog/daily-vs-periodic-map-rank-tracking).
3. **Does it show coverage**, meaning points in the top 3, over time, not just an
   average rank?
4. **Does it date every run** and keep the history, so a client report shows
   the change?
5. **What happens when Google changes something**, and how does the tool tell
   you? For how trackers compare, see
