# Widening Your Service Area Radius Changes Nothing

Making a Google Business Profile's service area bigger does not extend where
the business ranks in the map pack. As of September 2026 the service area tells
customers where a business travels to. The ranking is still measured from where
the business actually is, and the service area doesn't change that. On **17
August 2026** a post on r/localseo put it flatly: owners and even agencies still
widen the service area, "e.g., from 15 miles to 30 miles", expecting the top 3
to follow them into the next town. It doesn't. A bigger service area can also
add risk, because an oversized one is one of the first things agencies check
after a suspension.

```
  WHAT A SERVICE AREA CHANGE MOVES
  ┌──────────────────────────────────────┬───────────────┐
  │ shown to customers on the profile    │  yes          │
  │ where the business is measured from  │  no           │
  │ map pack cells you win               │  no           │
  │ attention in a suspension review     │  can increase │
  └──────────────────────────────────────┴───────────────┘
  a service area is a label for customers, not a ranking lever
```

## The Service Area Is a Label for Customers

Google's guidelines describe service areas as the places a business travels to
or delivers to. The guidelines also cap them. As of September 2026 a profile
can list up to 20 service areas, and they shouldn't reach more than about two
hours' drive from where the business is based. Those are limits on what the
business can *show*. Nothing in them says a larger area earns a wider ranking.

A storefront owner raised the other side of this in December 2025:

> Google's guidelines say service areas are only for businesses that travel to
> the customer.
>
> — r/localseo, December 2025

So for a business that customers visit, adding towns it doesn't travel to is
outside the rules on top of doing nothing for rankings.

## Ranking Is Still Measured From the Business

Distance is one of Google's three named local ranking factors. For a
service-area business with its address hidden, that address is hidden from
customers, not from Google. The August post makes the same point:

> Whether your address is displayed (Storefront) or hidden (Service Area
> Business), the local algorithm still calculates proximity from the exact
> physical coordinates verified during initial setup.
>
> — r/localseo, August 2026

The same post also claims a "0.0% correlation" from testing "hundreds of SAB
listings", credited to named industry studies. It gives no link to either. We
agree with the conclusion and do not repeat the figure.

## A Bigger Area Can Be a Suspension Flag

In July 2026 a separate r/localseo post listed what to check when a
service-area profile is suspended. Service-area settings came up twice:

> Is the profile covering some absurdly huge radius?
>
> — r/localseo, July 2026

It also flagged "20+ service areas". Stretching the setting doesn't win new
towns, and it can put the profile the business already has at risk.

## What Actually Changes Coverage in a Nearby Town

```
  15 MILES → 30 MILES, BEFORE AND AFTER — cells in the top 3
   before                    after
   ■ ■ □ □ □                 ■ ■ □ □ □      ■ = in the top 3
   ■ ■ ■ □ □                 ■ ■ ■ □ □      same pattern: the service area
   ■ ■ □ □ □                 ■ ■ □ □ □      moved, the map did not
                                            illustrative, not client data
```

What does move the outer cells is the same set of factors that works
everywhere else. Relevance comes from categories, services and a site page that
proves work in that town. Prominence comes from reviews that mention the area
and local links and mentions from there. Even then, the business will usually
rank more strongly near its own address than 20 miles out.

## What to Do Before Touching the Service Area

1. **Grid the money term across the town you want** before changing anything.
   Save that as the baseline.
2. **Set the service area honestly**: places the business really serves, within
   Google's limits. Then leave it alone.
3. **Build proof for the target town**: one real page with jobs, photos and
   reviews from there, not a page that only swaps the city name. See
   [local SEO for service-area businesses](/blog/local-seo-for-service-area-businesses).
4. **Re-grid the same points after 6–8 weeks.** If the outer cells haven't
   moved, the gap is distance, and the honest answer may be ads or a real
   second location. See
   [suspension vs a ranking drop](/blog/suspension-vs-ranking-drop) before
   anyone opens a second profile.
