# A Spam Listing Holds the Spot and Three Reports Did Nothing

When a spam Google Business Profile takes a real business's map pack spot,
reporting it through Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form is the right
move. As of September 2026 it is also the slowest, and it gives you the least
information back. On **5 August 2026** an agency told r/localseo that a listing
at their client's own address had held the #1 spot for the client's main
keyword for about five months. It had services stuffed into the business name,
no real photos, and five-star reviews posted in tight clusters. They reported it
three times and two other local businesses reported it separately. The only
reply was the auto-confirmation email. For an agency, a report is one step, not
the plan.

## A Report Goes In and Nothing Comes Back

The redressal form is Google's own route for reporting listings that break its
guidelines. What the poster described is what the rest of our corpus describes
too: you file, you get a confirmation, and no status follows.

> Filed the GBP redressal/spam form three separate times over that period. No
> change, no response beyond the auto-confirmation email. Had two other
> unrelated local businesses in the niche also report it independently
> (didn't coordinate, just asked around), still nothing.

The same thing turns up across other trades. A locksmith counted at least 10
fake listings with addresses at big-box stores (January 2026). A chimney
business said most of the ones they reported through forms and edits were
still up (July 2026). Someone else drove to listed addresses and sent in
geotagged photos, "to no avail" (April 2026). None of the eight post bodies
reports a removal. The replies may include some, and we have not counted them.

## The Name Field Is Doing the Ranking

As of September 2026, Google's guidelines for representing a business say the
name on the profile must be the business's real-world name. Adding services or
locations to it is not allowed. The rule exists because a keyword in the name
works: industry surveys such as Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors have
listed keywords in the business name as a strong map pack factor for years.

So a listing with the money keyword in its name can hold the top spot on
relevance alone. That is how a listing about five months old beat an
established business at the same address. The client's profile being in good
order changes nothing about that name-field advantage.

## Suggest an Edit Carries Its Own Risk

The obvious workaround is to use "Suggest an edit" to cut the name back to
what it really is. One practitioner posted a warning about this in February 2026:

> A business can subpoena Google and request a record of who's been making
> edits to their Google Business Profile.
>
> — r/localseo, February 2026

That is their claim, and we have not checked it against a court record. But
it is the reason many agencies keep reports on the redressal form, filed under
the business's name and backed by evidence, instead of making anonymous edits
from their own accounts.

## Measure How Much of the Map It Actually Holds

"Took the #1 spot for their main keyword" is almost always true from one
place. Before you plan around the spam listing, check how far its advantage
reaches.

```
  MAIN KEYWORD, CHECKED FROM A GRID AROUND THE SHARED ADDRESS
      spam holds #1   ■ ■ ■         ■ = spam listing in pack, client below it
                      ■ ■ ■ □ □     □ = client in pack, spam absent
                        □ □ □ □     illustrative layout, not client data
  the name field wins at the door; it loses where the reviews and links win
```

A stuffed name helps most near the address. Further out, the ordinary factors
take over again: reviews, links, category fit, time in business. The cells
where the client already beats it are the ones to protect and report on.
Losing one cell and losing the city are different problems for the client.

## What to Do While the Report Sits in the Queue

1. **Build the evidence file once.** Street View history, photos of the
   address, the state business-registry search for the stuffed name, and
   screenshots of the review clusters with dates.
2. **File redressal under the client's name**, attaching that evidence. Log the
   date and case reference. Refile only when you have new evidence, not on a timer.
3. **Grid the main keyword and two close variants** from the same points, and
   date each run. See
   [what geo-grid rank tracking is](/blog/what-is-geogrid-rank-tracking).
4. **Compete where the spam listing is weak.** Categories, services, steady
   reviews and local links move the cells where its name stops helping. The
   pattern is covered in
   [why a competitor ranks higher with worse reviews](/blog/why-competitor-ranks-higher-with-worse-reviews).
5. **Tell the client the honest timeline.** Removal isn't in your control.
   Coverage is. Report both, and keep the pillar diagnosis in view:
