# Suspension vs Ranking Drop: How to Tell Which One You Have

Published: 2026-09-10

For a local business owner, the difference between a suspended **Google
Business Profile** and one that has simply fallen in the **Google Maps map
pack** is settled by two checks: **search your own business name**, then **open
your dashboard**. A suspension removes you from search entirely and announces
itself; a ranking drop does neither.

There are four states rather than two, and the middle two are why owners
misdiagnose this. In the **19 owner questions about a Maps ranking drop we
collected between 31 July and 19 August 2026**, only **2 mentioned suspension at
all** — and one of those was an owner ruling it out before asking anything else.

```
  FOUR STATES, NOT TWO
  ┌──────────────┬───────────┬──────────┬────────┐
  │ state        │ name find │ in pack  │ notice │
  ├──────────────┼───────────┼──────────┼────────┤
  │ ranked lower │ yes       │ lower    │ none   │
  │ filtered     │ yes       │ absent   │ none   │
  │ suspended    │ no        │ absent   │ yes    │
  │ deleted      │ no        │ absent   │ none   │
  └──────────────┴───────────┴──────────┴────────┘
  the last row is the cruel one
```

## The Two Questions, in Order

```
  TWO QUESTIONS, FOUR ANSWERS
  search your own business name
    │
    ├─ you appear
    │    ├─ in the pack, lower  → a ranking drop
    │    └─ absent from pack    → filtered
    │
    └─ you do not appear
         ├─ dashboard has a notice → suspended
         └─ dashboard has nothing  → check for deletion
```

Run them in that order and most of the ambiguity is gone in under a minute. The
name search is the cheap one and it eliminates the outcome most of the internet
writes about — which is also the reason to run it first, covered in the
[ranking drop check order](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-maps-ranking-dropped).

## Filtered: Live, Verified, and Still Absent

The state that produces the most wasted effort is the one where every indicator
says the profile is healthy and it is still not in the pack.

An agency posted this on **10 July 2026** for a US service area business with a
hidden address, whose leads came almost entirely through the profile. Their
description of the state:

> dashboard verified (blue check), no warnings, no errors, reviews intact.
> Fully visible via brand search and direct CID. So it's live, just filtered
> for broad terms.
>
> — agency report, r/GoogleMyBusiness, July 2026

Every suspension test passes. Every ranking test fails. The profile answers to
its own name and to nothing else — and that combination is the definition of
filtered rather than dropped or suspended.

Filtering has causes worth checking in their own right, most commonly a
duplicate listing sharing your address. The mechanisms that remove a profile
from the pack while leaving it findable are set out in
[what pushes a profile out of the map pack](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/google-business-profile-out-of-map-pack).

## Reinstatement Is Not the End of the Story

The same report carries a second finding, and it is one almost nothing published
prepares owners for: **a reinstated profile can rank and then stop.**

The timeline they described, after a profile suspended more than once and
eventually reinstated with a product expert's help:

```
  AFTER A REINSTATEMENT — ONE REPORTED TIMELINE
  ┌──────────┬────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ ~48 h    │ live, but only for the exact name  │
  │ days 1-3 │ ranked #1-2 for category + city    │
  │ overnight│ gone from the pack for broad terms │
  │ after    │ still findable by name only        │
  └──────────┴────────────────────────────────────┘
  no edits were made before the drop
```

They asked whether this is the usual post-reinstatement pattern that settles, or
something specific. There is no published answer — Google documents
reinstatement, and documents nothing about what ranking does afterwards. What
the report establishes is that **being reinstated and being visible are separate
milestones**, and that the gap between them is measured in days at minimum.

Their instinct on what to do next is the right one and worth repeating: they
asked whether editing the profile while it settles would be a mistake. During any
re-review or post-reinstatement period, editing restarts the clock you are
waiting on.

## Deleted, With No Notice at All

The fourth state is rare and it is worse than suspension, because suspension at
least tells you.

An owner reported on **10 March 2026** that a profile of several years standing —
verified, with reviews, appearing normally — vanished from the dashboard, from
Search and from Maps at once, with **no suspension notice, no policy warning and
no email of any kind**. Google Support's reply in the ticket thread was that the
profile was deleted permanently and could not be restored, with no reason or
policy cited, and a suggestion to create a new listing.

That is not a ranking problem and no amount of local SEO addresses it. It is
listed here for one reason: **an absent dashboard entry is diagnostic.** A
suspended profile still exists in your dashboard with a notice attached. If the
listing is gone from the dashboard as well as from search, you are in a
different process with a different, unhappier support path.

## Why Guessing Wrong Is Expensive

The two errors are not symmetrical.

| you guess | you are actually | what it costs |
|---|---|---|
| suspended | ranked lower | a reinstatement request opens a manual review of a working profile |
| ranked lower | suspended | weeks of optimisation on a listing nobody can see |
| suspended | filtered | the duplicate causing it stays in place |
| ranked lower | deleted | months, and the review history is not recoverable |

The first row is the common one and the one worth avoiding hardest. If your
business appears when you search its name, there is nothing to reinstate. And if
the fall might not be real at all, that is a separate test —
[a real drop versus normal fluctuation](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/real-map-pack-drop-vs-fluctuation).

## What to Record Before You Act

Whichever state you are in, write these down first. They are the evidence any
support conversation or diagnosis will need, and they are much harder to
reconstruct later.

1. **The date and time** you first noticed, and what you searched.
2. **What a name search returns**, verbatim — including whether the profile
   appears with fields missing.
3. **Exactly what the dashboard says**, including the absence of a notice.
4. **Your last five profile edits and their dates.** Address and category
   changes matter most.
5. **A position from more than one location**, so you can tell a removal from
   normal position variation. If you have never seen it before, the case for
   this is in [why one rank number lies](https://www.getrankonmap.com/blog/one-rank-number-lies).

If it turns out you never ranked in the first place, that is a different problem
with a different starting point:
