# A 3k and a 5k Quote Rarely Describe the Same Work

Published: 2026-10-12

When two agencies quote $3,000 and $5,000 a month for what looks like the same
local SEO work, the scopes usually aren't the same. They're written in units
that can't be compared: "optimization", "content", "reporting". As of September
2026 local SEO has no standard unit of work, so price follows what each agency
charges for its time, not a shared rate card. On **15 August 2026** someone
asked r/localseo whether agency pricing is "mostly arbitrary", after receiving
exactly those two quotes, and the thread drew 39 replies. It isn't arbitrary,
but it is hard to read. The fix is to turn both quotes into the same units
before comparing them.

## The Market Runs From $100 to $5,000

Our ledger of fees named in r/localseo post bodies runs from "$100-150/month"
for a solo practitioner to $3,000–5,000 for agencies. The five people who said
what they charge themselves have a median of $379 a month. The $3,000–5,000
figures all come from people describing *other* agencies' prices. Within that
range, a $2,000 gap between two quotes isn't unusual. The question is what
each quote actually covers.

## Output Is Not Always Where the Money Goes

A freelancer charging $700 a month for profile management, rank tracking,
reporting, technical fixes and content planning said in April 2026:

> I have seen businesses pay $3k-$5k a month for way less actual output. Like a
> generic audit up front and two blogs a month for 4 grand
>
> — r/localseo, April 2026

That's one side's view. But it shows how the higher fee is often justified by
things other than output: account management, meetings, senior time, brand
risk, and overheads. An agency that outsources the work passes that cost on
too. None of this is wrong. It just isn't the same product as a freelancer's
hours, and a scope written in vague terms hides the difference.

## Small Clients Cost More to Serve Than Their Fee Suggests

An agency owner described the other side in December 2025: "the smaller the
client the more they expect for their spend", meaning more meetings, more
audits, more input. Some of the gap between quotes is each agency's estimate
of how much of its time the account will take, priced in before the work
starts. A quote that assumes a weekly call and a quote that assumes a monthly
report are pricing two different relationships, even when the task lists match.

## Put Both Quotes in the Same Units

```
  ASK BOTH AGENCIES FOR THE SAME SIX NUMBERS
  ┌──────────────────────────────────────────┬─────────┬─────────┐
  │                                          │ $3k     │ $5k     │
  ├──────────────────────────────────────────┼─────────┼─────────┤
  │ hours per month, and whose hours         │         │         │
  │ named deliverables per month             │         │         │
  │ what is measured: grid, calls, jobs      │         │         │
  │ meetings per month                       │         │         │
  │ minimum term and notice period           │         │         │
  │ what is excluded (ads, site, content)    │         │         │
  └──────────────────────────────────────────┴─────────┴─────────┘
  then compare cost per deliverable, and what each one measures
```

The row that matters most is the third. A quote that measures map pack
coverage, calls and booked jobs is selling results you can check. A quote that
measures "rankings" and "traffic" is selling activity.

## What to Do With Two Quotes

1. **Send both agencies the six questions above** and ask for written answers.
2. **Divide the fee by named deliverables and by hours.** The cheaper quote per
   unit is often not the lower total.
3. **Check who does the work.** Senior hours, junior hours and outsourced
   hours are priced differently.
4. **Pick the quote that reports calls and jobs.** See
   [local SEO ROI is booked jobs, not rankings or traffic](/blog/how-to-show-roi-for-local-seo-clients).
5. **Agree a month-four review against the same numbers.** See
   [four months in, the client is reading the wrong numbers](/blog/four-months-in-client-disappointed),
   and for tying rankings to calls,
