Cut Every Tool That Doesn't Answer a Client Question
List the questions clients actually ask and keep only tools that answer one free Google tools can't. For most freelancers that is one map pack tracker.

The way to cut local SEO tool subscriptions without hurting client work is to list the questions clients actually ask, and keep only the tools that answer one of them that free Google tools can't. As of September 2026, for a solo practitioner with small local clients, that usually leaves one paid tool for where the business shows up in the map pack by location, plus free Google tools for the rest. On 10 August 2026 a freelancer told r/localseo that going through their subscriptions "was a bit of a shock". Semrush, Local Falcon, reporting software "and a couple of other bits and pieces" added up to far more than they'd realised, for clients who were mostly small local businesses.

Free Google Tools Are Named Most Often
In our ledger of tools named in 912 r/localseo posts from August 2025 to August 2026, Google Search Console is the single most-named tool, in 44 posts. BrightLocal is named in 28, Semrush in 23, and GA4 in 7. The free tools already cover website visibility, website behaviour and the Business Profile's own calls and clicks. What they don't cover is the map pack across a service area, which is the first thing most local clients ask about.
The cost per client makes the point. A $120 tracker spread across six clients is $20 each. Three overlapping suites at similar prices, spread across the same six, can take a large share of a $150 fee before any work is done. At small fees the question isn't whether a tool is good. It's whether it answers something the client pays you for.
One Practitioner's Cuts, and What Survived
A practitioner running local SEO for six small businesses, most paying "$100-150/month", described their own cuts in May 2026. They dropped BrightLocal "after 3 months", because the per-location pricing added up and the grid feature wasn't worth "$50-60/month" at their size. SE Ranking lasted two months, because its main extra, white-label reporting, didn't matter:
my clients don't need polished reports, they need their phone to ring more.
r/localseo, May 2026
What survived was one paid rank tracker on "the lowest plan, $120/month". They had tried cutting it twice and "both times I missed it within a month". The tool that answered a question nothing free could answer was the one they kept.
Reporting Software Is Usually the First Cut
Polished reporting tools cost money every month and answer no new question. They reformat numbers that Search Console, the profile's Performance report and a rank tracker already produce. For small local clients, a plain monthly summary of map pack coverage, calls and booked jobs does the job better. See local SEO ROI is booked jobs. Agencies with many clients and brand requirements are the exception, because for them the time saved across dozens of reports can pay for the tool.
Keep Overlapping Tools Only Where They Disagree Usefully
Two suites that both estimate traffic and rankings mostly duplicate each other, and a July 2026 thread showed they often don't even agree. The practitioner found "almost every metric is different" between two major suites for the same site. Paying for both to get two estimates of the same thing rarely helps a local client. Pick one, or pick neither and use the real figures from Search Console.
An Audit Pass for Your Subscriptions
- List every tool and its monthly cost, then divide by active clients.
- Write the client question each tool answers. If you can't name one, cancel it.
- Check whether a free Google tool answers it. Search Console, GA4 and the profile's Performance report often do.
- Keep one tool for map pack coverage by location. Nothing free covers it reliably. See local rank tracking for agencies.
- Price what's left per scan and per client. See local rank tracker cost per scan, and for the full landscape, the best local SEO tools.
Our Interest, Stated
RankMap makes a grid rank tracker, so advice to pay for one map pack tracker comes from an interested party. The test on this page, whether a tool answers a client question that free tools can't, applies to our tool as much as anyone's.
Frequently asked questions
- 01Which local SEO tools are essential for a solo freelancer?
- Usually one paid tool that tracks map pack visibility by location, plus free Google tools: Search Console, GA4 and the Business Profile's Performance report. As of September 2026 those cover the questions most small local clients ask.
- 02Which SEO subscriptions can I cancel first?
- Reporting software and overlapping suites. Reporting tools reformat numbers you already have, and two suites often estimate the same metrics differently.
- 03Is there a free way to track Google Maps rankings by location?
- Not reliably. Manual checks depend on your own location and device. Map pack coverage across a service area is the one job worth paying for.
