The tools local SEO practitioners name most often are free Google tools and general AI assistants, not paid local suites. In our count of tools named in 912 r/localseo posts from August 2025 to August 2026, Google Search Console appears in 44 posts and ChatGPT in 37. The most-named paid local suite, BrightLocal, appears in 28. As of September 2026 AI assistants are the part of the daily kit that's growing. On 12 August 2026 someone asked r/localseo "what SEO tools do you actually use every day, and which one saves you the most time?" It drew 140 comments, one of the most-discussed tools threads in our cache. Those replies aren't cached, but the posts around them show the same pattern.

Free Google Tools Are the Base Layer

Search Console is the most-named tool overall, and its share held steady or rose across all three periods. It's the one source that shows real queries, real impressions and real clicks from Google, rather than a third party's estimate. When two paid suites disagree, as one practitioner found in July 2026 (they reported almost every metric came out different), Search Console is the number people fall back on.

When I check the same website in Semrush and Ahrefs, almost every metric is different.

r/localseo, July 2026

The Business Profile's own Performance report and GA4 cover the rest of the free layer: calls, website clicks and direction requests from the profile, and behaviour on the site.

AI Assistants Moved Into the Daily Kit

Posts naming ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude rose from 5.1% of posts in late 2025 to 7.0% through 2026. The uses described in the corpus are practical: drafting review replies, planning content, building lead sheets, even a lawyer who built and optimised their own site with assistants. The shift is modest, and the later periods have more posts, so read it as a direction, not a precise rate.

What assistants don't do is just as important for local work. They don't report where a business ranks in the map pack, and their answers about local businesses change from one run to the next. They are good at producing text: replies, descriptions, page drafts, summaries of a client's reviews. They aren't a source of measurements. A daily kit that treats an assistant's statement about rankings as data will produce reports nobody can check, and the first time a client checks one on their own phone, the whole report loses credibility.

Paid tools come up when there's a job the free layer can't do. That means citation management, link data, or a map pack view by location. A practitioner with six small clients described in May 2026 keeping one paid tracker on "the lowest plan" after cutting two suites. They had tried to drop it twice and missed it both times. Grid trackers are named least often of all (Local Falcon, 7 posts). That fits a narrow tool that does one thing nothing free can.

What "Saves the Most Time" Usually Means

The thread asked which tool saves the most time. For local work the answer depends on the job:

DAILY JOB WHAT PRACTITIONERS REACH FOR
"what's Google showing us?" Search Console
"are people calling?" GBP Performance, call tracking
"where do we show on the map?" a map pack tracker, by location
"write / reply / summarise" an AI assistant
"fix listings at scale" a citation tool

Building Your Own Daily Kit

  1. Open Search Console and the profile's Performance report first. They are free and they are Google's own numbers.
  2. Use an AI assistant for writing work, and check what it produces. Review replies in particular get filtered if they read like templates.
  3. Add one map pack tracker for visibility by location, run on a fixed schedule. See no local SEO tool is 90% accurate.
  4. Add suites only for jobs you do every week. See start a small agency stack with free tools and one tracker.
  5. Review the kit every quarter against what clients actually ask. For the wider landscape, see the best local SEO tools.

Our Interest, Stated

RankMap makes a grid rank tracker, so advice to pay for one map pack tracker comes from an interested party. The test on this page, whether a tool answers a client question that free tools can't, applies to our tool as much as anyone's.
