A Local Audit Tool Should Compare, Not Score

Forty reviews is strong in one market and invisible in another. A useful local audit tool compares a profile with who beats it, instead of scoring it.

Two coats on a rail measured with the same tailor's tape, while a crumpled SEO score of 87/100 sits in a bin.

A local SEO analyser is genuinely useful when it compares a business's profile with the businesses that beat it for the same search in the same area. A score against a generic checklist is much less useful. As of September 2026 most local ranking factors only mean something next to a competitor. Forty reviews is strong in one market and invisible in another. On 22 July 2026 someone asked r/localseo which metrics and reports matter most during audits, and "what do these tools usually miss?" The thread drew 13 replies. Our corpus suggests an answer: the audits practitioners trust are written as comparisons, and the checklists aren't.

A Checklist Tells You What Exists, Not What's Missing Relative to the Winners

An August 2025 audit checklist covers the familiar ground: NAP consistency, primary and secondary categories, description, photos, reviews and replies, posts, services, Q&A. Every item is sensible. None is measured against anything. "Consistently getting new reviews" passes whether the business gets two a month in a market where the leaders get twenty, or twenty where the leaders get two.

A tool that turns that checklist into a score out of 100 inherits the same blind spot. A 92 can lose to a 70 if the 70 is closer to the searcher and has three times the reviews.

The Practitioner Who Audits Daily Frames Everything Against a Competitor

A March 2026 post from someone who says they "audit service businesses every single day" opens with its first finding:

First, your reviews aren't comparable to competitors.

r/localseo, March 2026

Each point after that is comparative. The half-finished profile is set against "your competitor who has all their services listed, posts weekly, and has 50+ photos". Links are "zero backlinks from local sources and your competitor has 30". That is the report an analyser should produce.

A Score Pushes the Wrong Work

A checklist score also shapes what gets done next. It rewards filling every field and ticking every habit, whatever the payoff. Weekly posts are the usual example. One practitioner wrote in July 2026 that they "stopped telling clients to post on gbp every week", because "the ones who skip it rank the same", while the ones who reply to reviews within hours "rank better". That's one person's observation, not a test. But it shows the risk. A tool that scores posting frequency will send the client's limited time to posting, and a comparison with the winners might have sent it to reviews.

Which Competitor? The One Winning the Cells That Matter

Comparing against "the competition" in general doesn't help much. The useful comparison is with whichever businesses hold the top 3 where the client's customers search. That can be a different business in each part of town. So an analyser needs a location dimension before its comparisons mean anything. For the pattern where a weaker-looking business wins anyway, see why a competitor ranks higher with worse reviews.

What Analysers Usually Miss

From the audits in our corpus, and our own three local audits, one problem:

  OFTEN MISSED WHY IT MATTERS
primary category vs the winners decides which searches you enter
review count vs the local median stars barely vary; counts vary a lot
replies under complaints what prospects read before calling
visibility by location one rank number hides the map
profile state (live / filtered) a "filtered" profile audits as healthy

What to Ask a Local SEO Analyser to Do

  1. Pick the comparison set automatically: the businesses in the top 3 for the client's main term, by area.
  2. Show each factor against that set, meaning categories, review count and recency, services and photos, not against a fixed standard.
  3. Map visibility by location before recommending anything.
  4. Flag profile state, meaning suspended, removed or filtered, before scoring.
  5. Rank the fixes by the gap to the winners, biggest first. For a manual version, see how to do a local SEO audit, and for tools, the best local SEO tools.

Frequently asked questions

01What makes a local SEO audit tool useful?
It compares the business with the ones beating it for the same search in the same area. As of September 2026 a checklist score can't tell you whether 40 reviews is strong or weak in a given market.
02What do local SEO analysers usually miss?
The primary category against the winners, review count against the local median, replies under complaints, visibility by location, and whether the profile is live or filtered.
03Which competitors should a local audit compare against?
The businesses in the top 3 for the client's main search, area by area. That can be a different competitor in each part of town.
