Three Local Audits, One Identical Problem

A plumber, a dentist and a roofer, audited in one week: all three had a wrong primary category and unanswered reviews. The cheapest check is skipped.

The most common thing a local SEO audit finds is not a penalty, a Google update or a shortage of links. It is a wrong primary category on the Google Business Profile, and reviews that nobody has replied to. On 19 July 2026 a practitioner told r/localseo they had audited a plumber, a dentist and a roofer that week, in different cities and on different budgets. All three had both problems. The category took two minutes to fix. As of September 2026 that is still the cheapest check in local SEO. It is also the one agencies skip most often, because it looks too basic to be the answer.

Three Businesses, Same Two Faults

The post is short and specific:

plumber, dentist, roofer. different cities. different budgets. all 3 had a wrong primary category and zero review responses

not a ranking problem. not a google update. not "we need more backlinks." just the basics nobody checked in 2 years

r/localseo, July 2026

Three businesses is not a study. But the pattern matches the other audit threads in our corpus. None of the four blamed links or an update. Three of the four named profile basics.

The Primary Category Decides Which Searches You Enter

As of September 2026 Google tells businesses to choose the category that describes the business as a whole, and relevance is one of its three named local ranking factors. A roofer filed under a general contractor category, or a dentist under a broader medical category, competes for someone else's searches and is weaker on its own. Industry surveys such as Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors have listed the primary category as a leading map pack factor for years.

The quickest check is to search the client's money term and read the category shown under each business name in the top 3. If the client's category doesn't match what the winners use, fix that first.

Replying to Reviews Is Mostly About the Next Customer

Google lists responding to reviews among its tips for local visibility. Whether replies move rankings on their own is not something we can show from this thread. What they clearly do is change what a reader sees on the profile. An owner who never answers, including under the complaints, looks absent. Our ranked #1 but the phone is not ringing case turned on exactly that. Treat replies as a conversion fix that might also help rankings, not as a ranking lever.

"Not a Ranking Problem" Still Needs a Ranking Check

The poster concluded the issues were "not a ranking problem". A wrong primary category usually is one. It limits which searches the profile appears for, and where. The only way to know how much the two-minute fix was worth is to measure the same points before and after.

Figure 2 · THE SAME FIX, TWO WAYS TO REPORT IT
THE SAME FIX, TWO WAYS TO REPORT IT

unmeasured: "fixed category, replied to reviews" → client shrugs
measured: grid 3 terms → fix → re-grid in 3 wks → cells gained, dated

The Five-Minute Basics Check

  1. Primary category. Compare it against the categories of the top 3 for the client's money term. Fix it before anything else. Then see secondary categories.
  2. Review replies. Count unanswered reviews in the last 12 months, complaints first. Set up a weekly reply routine.
  3. Services and description. Check they list what the business actually sells, in the words customers use.
  4. Grid three money terms before touching anything, and again three weeks after. For the rest of the list, see how to do a local SEO audit.
  5. Only then look at links and content. If the basics were wrong, anything measured before the fix was measuring the wrong profile. For the full diagnostic order, see still not in the map pack top 3.

Frequently asked questions

01What is the most common problem found in a local SEO audit?
A wrong primary category on the Google Business Profile, often alongside reviews nobody has answered. As of September 2026 practitioners report these basics more often than link or penalty problems.
02How do I check if my Google Business Profile primary category is wrong?
Search your main service term and read the category shown under each business in the top 3. If yours differs from what the winners use, change it and measure rankings before and after.
03Do review responses improve Google Maps rankings?
Google lists replying among its local visibility tips, but the direct ranking effect is unproven. The clear effect is on customers: a profile with answered reviews, especially the complaints, looks like a business that is present.
