Deleting 40 Bad Citations Doubled a Client's Calls
One agency removed a client from about 40 low-quality directories and profile calls doubled within six weeks. When fewer citations help, and why.

Removing a local business from low-quality directories can raise its Google Business Profile results instead of lowering them, when those listings carry conflicting name, address or phone details. On 27 July 2026 a practitioner told r/localseo about a garage door repair client with 200+ citations. They removed the client from about 40 low-quality directories and cleaned up duplicates. Profile impressions went up, and calls from the profile doubled within six weeks. As of September 2026 that is one agency's report on one client, not a controlled test. It is still useful because it runs against the advice agencies are sold most often: build more citations.

The Count Went Down and the Calls Went Up
The post is specific about what was removed and why:
after removing the client from about 40 low-quality directories (ones with zero traffic or conflicting info), their Google Business Profile impressions actually went up. Not down. And their phone calls from GMB doubled within 6 weeks.
r/localseo, July 2026
The accuracy score is the number to watch. It rose from 74% to 98% on BrightLocal's measure. The total citation count fell. The poster's reading is that "Google seems to value consistency over quantity", and that conflicting listings "were probably confusing the algorithm".
What This One Case Cannot Prove
Before this goes in a client pitch, look at what else changed. The cleanup "spent months" fixing duplicates and correcting NAP, and the 40 deletions happened as part of that. Several changes landed together, on one client, in one trade, over six weeks, and garage door repair can be seasonal. The post doesn't say whether rankings moved, only impressions and calls.
That doesn't make the report wrong. It means the claim that holds up is narrower. Cleaning up conflicting listings was followed by more calls. Whether deleting any one directory caused it is a different question.
More Citations Also Helped Someone Else
The other direction shows up in the same room. In July 2026 a business owner in what they called a non-competitive area reported that about 30 new citations "moved us to 2-6 for 1/3 to half of our keywords" after two months. They asked whether to just order 50 more.
Both reports can be true together. A business with few listings gains from the first 30 accurate ones. A business with 200 messy ones gains from removing the ones that contradict it. The useful measure is how consistent the listings are, not how many there are.
Why a Listing on Another Site Matters at All
As of September 2026, Google says prominence, one of its three named local ranking factors, is partly based on what it knows about a business "from across the web, like links, articles, and directories". A directory listing is one of those sources. When it agrees with the profile, it backs up the profile's details. When it shows an old phone number, a previous address or a slightly different business name, it is a source that disagrees.
A garage door business with 200+ listings built up over years by different people is very likely to have some of those. Every agency that touched it, every automated submission, and every directory that scraped an old listing leaves a version behind. Deleting the worst 40 doesn't add anything new. It removes contradictions.
When a Citation Is Worth Deleting
The poster ended on the open question, "when is a citation bad enough to delete vs. just leave alone?" Their own criteria give a workable rule:
DELETE OR FIX LEAVE ALONE wrong or old phone / address → fix, or delete if unfixable duplicate of another listing → merge or delete the duplicate zero-traffic spam directory, → delete conflicting details zero-traffic directory, → leave; low value, low harm correct details
What to Do Before Ordering More Citations
- Run an accuracy audit first, and record the score and the date. Accuracy comes before count.
- Fix or remove anything with a wrong phone, old address or duplicate entry. These are the listings that contradict the profile.
- Grid the money terms before and after, so the result is a map and not only an impressions line. See the map pack tracking gap.
- Only then add citations, and only on directories customers actually use in that trade.
- Measure calls separately from rankings. The poster's win was calls. See ranked #1 but the phone is not ringing, and for the full diagnostic order, still not in the map pack top 3.
Frequently asked questions
- 01Can deleting citations improve Google Maps results?
- It can, when the deleted listings carry wrong or conflicting details. As of September 2026 one agency reported that removing about 40 low-quality listings raised citation accuracy from 74% to 98%, and calls from the profile doubled within six weeks.
- 02Is it better to have more citations or more accurate citations?
- Accurate ones. A business with few listings can gain from adding accurate ones. A business with many messy ones gains from fixing or removing the listings that contradict its profile.
- 03Which citations should I delete?
- Duplicates, listings with a wrong phone or old address you cannot fix, and spam directories showing conflicting details. Leave correct listings on low-value directories alone: low value, but little harm.
