Why a Client Will Not Rank
The profile is complete, the work was done, and the map pack still will not move. Where to look, in the order that finds it.

13 practitioners answered an agency asking why it isn't top 3 in the map pack. 11 diagnosed it. Only 2 asked where the business actually ranks.

Local Organic Weighs Links More Than the Map Pack Does
Backlinks weigh more in local organic results than in the map pack. A local link counts twice: once in organic, once for map pack prominence.

Being passed and being taken out look identical from the dashboard and have nothing in common. A name search separates them in a minute.
A profile that "will not rank" is usually ranking somewhere. The area it fails in is the finding; one position cannot show it.
In 19 owner reports of a ranking drop, not one named a competitor and not one was fixed by more reviews.
Almost every stuck profile is stuck for a reason you can name
Not a mystery, and usually not a penalty. Four causes cover most of it, they are checkable in order, and three of the four are visible before you touch the profile.
Why a Client Will Not Rank: common questions
1We did everything right and still are not in the top 3. Why?
Three businesses fit in the pack, so doing everything right only puts you in contention for a slot somebody currently holds. The tie is usually broken on distance from the searcher and on how exactly the primary category matches, neither of which is fixed by doing more of the work you already did.
2How do I tell a real map pack drop from normal fluctuation?
By checking the same points more than once. A four-place move read from a single check is almost never a drop — map results move day to day for reasons that have nothing to do with you. A real fall shows up as the same points losing position across repeated checks, not as one bad reading.
3My client has discovery impressions but never appears in the map pack. What does that mean?
Discovery impressions count the times the profile was shown for a category search anywhere in the area, including positions no one scrolls to. They are evidence of relevance, not of placement. A profile can collect thousands of them and hold no pack position at all, which is why impressions are the wrong instrument for answering "where do we rank".
4A spam listing holds my client’s spot and reporting it does nothing. What now?
Reports are slow and frequently go nowhere, so treat removal as a bonus rather than the plan. The workable move is to measure where the spam listing actually beats you across the area — it is rarely everywhere — and take the cells where the contest is close on the signals you do control.
5Does widening the service area radius help a service-area business rank further out?
No. Service area boundaries are a delivery statement, not a ranking input, and practitioners testing this across large numbers of listings report no correlation with ranking outside the proximity centroid. Expanding the radius changes who can book you, not who can find you.
