AI Answers and the Map Pack Pick Businesses Differently

A business can rank high in AI answers and still miss the map pack. The pack ranks profiles by distance; AI answers are written from retrieved pages.

A glowing book pulled forward on an AI answers shelf, beside a street map where the same business pin is missing.

A business can show up high in AI answers and still be missing from the map pack for the same search, because the two draw on different inputs. The map pack ranks Business Profiles on relevance, prominence and distance from the exact searcher. An AI answer is written from pages the system retrieves, along with whatever it knows about the business. As of September 2026, being named in one tells you very little about the other. On 9 August 2026 a practitioner asked r/localseo "what would cause a GBP to rank high in Ai search/ai mode results but not high in map packs?", adding that map packs felt more important. The thread drew 7 replies. Here is what the two systems read.

The Map Pack Is Tied to the Searcher's Location

Google names relevance, distance and prominence as the map pack's local ranking factors. Distance means distance from the person searching. A business can be the best-described company in its trade and still sit outside the top 3 for anyone standing more than a short distance away. That's why the same profile can look strong in one check and absent in the next. See why Google Maps ranking varies by location.

AI Answers Are Written From Retrieved Pages

We counted the sources in our cached archive of recorded AI answers to local SEO and Business Profile questions, 524 Google AI Overviews from August 2025 to September 2026. 522 cited at least one page. Google's own help pages came up in 85.5%, YouTube in 57.8%, business.google.com in 38.9%, and Reddit in 16.6%. These are mostly how-to questions, not "best plumber near me". But they show how the answers are built, from pages the system can retrieve and cite.

A business well described across pages like that can be named in an answer even where its profile is outside the pack for the searcher's exact location.

AI Systems Don't Always See the Live Profile

Practitioners describe a gap between what's on Google Maps and what assistants say about it:

For example if my local gym has 100 Google reviews on maps, AI usually will pull from either reviews from other sources, or it seems their is a time lag

r/GoogleMyBusiness, April 2026

So the AI picture of a business can be older or narrower than its live profile. It can be better or worse than the map pack suggests.

The Reverse Happens Too: Top of the Pack, Hurt by the Answer

The gap runs both ways. In March 2026 an agency described a dental practice with four locations, all in the map pack top 3, a 4.4 average from about 600 reviews. Then an AI Overview on its branded search summarised two one-star reviews as "some patients report long wait times and billing issues". Branded clicks to the site fell from about 3,200 a month to under 2,000 in five weeks, by the agency's own count. The pack position hadn't changed. The answer above it had.

The agency responded to each negative review with specific details of what had changed. That fits what the answer layer reads: the text on and around the profile, not the rank.

Being in One and Not the Other Is Still Worth Knowing

The practitioner's instinct that the map pack matters more is often right for a service business, because the pack is where calls happen. But the gap tells you something. Strong in AI and weak in the pack usually means the business is well described online and loses on distance or profile relevance for that area. That's a map pack problem with a known set of fixes. See relevance, distance and prominence.

How to Read the Gap

  1. Grid the map pack for the term across the area, and note where the profile is in the top 3.
  2. Ask the AI question several times, from the same town, and note how often the business is named.
  3. Strong AI, weak pack, strong near the address: distance. Compete in the outer cells, or accept the radius.
  4. Strong AI, weak pack everywhere: profile relevance. Check category and services first.
  5. Weak in both: start with the pillar, local businesses invisible to ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

01Why does my business show in AI answers but not in the Google map pack?
They use different inputs. As of September 2026 the map pack ranks profiles on relevance, prominence and distance from the searcher, while AI answers are written from pages the system retrieves. Being well described online doesn't overcome distance in the pack.
02What sources do Google AI Overviews cite for local SEO questions?
In our cached archive of 524 AI Overview answers to local SEO and Business Profile questions, Google's help pages appeared in 85.5%, YouTube in 57.8%, business.google.com in 38.9% and Reddit in 16.6%.
03Is the map pack or AI visibility more important for a local business?
For most service businesses the map pack is still where calls happen. Track both: the map pack on a grid, and AI answers by asking the same question several times.
