The Client Wants a New Website. The Profile Is the Problem
A client paid a few grand for a redesign and still got no calls. The Business Profile's own report shows whether the profile or the site is failing.

A local business that gets few calls from search often buys a new website when the real gap is its Google Business Profile. As of September 2026 you can tell which one is failing before anyone spends money. The profile's own Performance report shows whether people are finding the business, and whether they act on the profile, before a website is ever involved. On 13 August 2026 a practitioner told r/localseo about a client who had just paid a web design shop "a few grand" for a conversion-optimised redesign, and still got almost no calls from search. The profile had two categories where five or six applied, no post in over a year, and reviews that had stopped months after opening. It was "the third or fourth client this year" with the same story.

A New Site Cannot Fix a Listing Nobody Sees
The redesign in the thread was, in the poster's words, a "nice site honestly". That is the trap. Most local searchers see the map pack and the profile before they ever see the website. If the profile is thin, most of them never click through to it.
new site, no change, and the free listing was just sitting there half done.
r/localseo, August 2026
The poster described "a whole cottage industry of web designers selling redesigns to local businesses that don't need a new site". The same room has said it before. On 4 August 2026 a practitioner with "more than 10 years" in local SEO said a new website is "rarely the first problem", and that most local businesses already have a decent one.
Each gap on that profile costs something different. Two categories where five or six apply means the profile doesn't enter searches it qualifies for. That is a visibility loss no website can recover. A year without a post and reviews that stopped after the first month hurt the other half. The profile looks unattended to the people who do find it, so fewer of them call.
Sometimes the Website Really Is the Problem
The opposite also gets posted, and it got more agreement. On 30 July 2026 an r/localseo thread titled "Most business owners don't have an SEO problem, they have a website problem" listed thin service pages, no pricing guidance, no FAQs, no past work, and no reviews on the pages that need them. It had 32 upvotes and 41 comments, against 3 and 5 for the redesign thread.
Both are right about different clients. That is why the choice needs numbers. The table above splits the four places calls get lost, and each one has a different fix.
"No Change" Was Never Measured
Nothing in the thread says what the client's calls were before the redesign, or where they came from. "Still getting basically no calls from search" could mean the redesign did nothing, or that it helped the few visitors who arrived while the profile kept the numbers low. Without a before figure, nobody can say.
This is the same gap in both directions. In August 2026 an r/localseo post claimed "200% more inquiries" from profile fixes alone, with no starting number, no dates and no source for the count. The same post appeared twice within three days. A percentage without a starting number doesn't prove anything.
What to Read Before Anyone Spends on a Fix
- Pull 90 days of the profile's Performance report: views, calls, website clicks and direction requests. Note the date range.
- Put the profile and the website side by side. Categories, services, photos, posts and review recency against the service pages, pricing and proof. See the Google Business Profile optimization checklist.
- Find the break in the table above and fund that step first. It is often the two-hour profile fix covered in three local audits, one problem.
- Grid the money terms so "being found" is a map, not a guess.
- Re-read the same numbers 6–8 weeks later. That before-and-after is the proof the client never got for the redesign. For the reporting side, see ranked #1 but the phone is not ringing.
Frequently asked questions
- 01Should a local business redesign its website or fix its Google Business Profile first?
- Check the numbers first. As of September 2026 the profile's Performance report shows views, calls and website clicks. Few views or few profile actions means fix the profile. Plenty of website clicks but no leads means fix the site.
- 02Why is a new website not bringing more calls?
- Often because most local searchers act on the map pack and profile without ever reaching the site. If the profile has few categories, old posts and stalled reviews, a better website only reaches the few people who click through.
- 03How do I prove a local SEO fix worked?
- Record the profile's views, calls and website clicks, plus a rank grid, before the change, with dates. Re-read the same numbers 6–8 weeks later. A percentage without a starting number proves nothing.
